I AM OK, YOU ARE OK
What does this mean? It means: I respect myself and I respect
you. This is the first step to achieving peace within self and peace
with others. We know that no one is perfect, each of us has
drawbacks and deficiencies, but we all deserve basic respect as
human beings.
Do not put yourself down when someone behaves
inappropriately with you. To regain your composure after a
momentary bad feeling, say to yourself: "This reflects on the other
person, not me. I am all right." Do not evaluate yourself on the basis
of what other people think or say about you. Words uttered behind
your back do not bite. Calmly ignore them and move on with your
life.
Treat every person with respect, whatever his age or
ethnicity. you will earn respect in return. We do not have to love,
like, or agree with every person we meet, but we can part with
good feeling for each other. Remember Gandhiji's words: "Look
into the world with calm and clear eyes". Also Lincoln's: "Charity to
all, malice to none."
