ATMA-NIRBHAR BHARAT
Either this is taking India's economic policy in the wrong direction or just another
propaganda slogan from Narendra Modi. India needs to be more globally involved rather
than turning in an inward cocoon. India is confronting serious warning signals. It is slipping down
among the countries of the world, in terms of child development, hunger index and human freedoms.
It has taken backward steps with respect to global trade. All these negative trends precede Kovid 19
pandemic.
Here are a few policy recommendations based on the opinions of well known economists:
(1) India's economic slowdown is primarily due to slackening of consumer demand. Keynsian
economic stimulus is called for, such as, significant cash transfers in the hands of the poor.
(2) To alleviate high urban youth unemployment. something like starting urban MNREGA
may be helpful.
(3) Rural poverty can be reduced thru providing incentives to small industries for producing
consumer goods, based on low skill labor.
(4) Create Special Economic Zones to encourage export-oriented manufacturing and attract
foreign direct investment.
