ILLIBERAL TRENDS IN INDIA'S DEMOCRACY
Over last few years, under the rule of BJP party at the center, democracy has
been diminished in India. The party in power has treated one religious minority in
particular with disrespect. There is an increase of communal disturbances, leading to
undermining diversity of the country, which has been one of its strengths. This is
also a threat to the unity of the nation.
Independence of certain institutions, such as, press and judiciary, which are
the bedrock of democracy, has been significantly compromised under the current
regime. Also there is widespread misuse of certain government agencies, such as,
enforcement directorate and income tax department, for the purpose of intimidating
the opponents. Certain laws like one regarding sedition and the Unlawful Actions
Prevention Act (UAPA) are unjustly enforced to silence political dissent.
Internationally, ranking of India with respect to civil liberties has gone down.
Let us hope that some leaders will come forth from the polity to stir the
nation in order to fight and reverse these unfortunate trends, unitedly but peacefully.
