HUMAN FREEDOM INDEX
The Human Freedom Index presents the state of human freedom in the world
based on a broad measure that encompasses personal, civil and economic freedom.
Cato Institute has published HFI report that covers 162 countries for 2018, the most recent
year for which sufficient data are available. The jurisdictions that took the top ten places
were New Zealand, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Ireland
Estonia and Germany Sweden (tied in 9th place). Certain selected countries were ranked as
follows: Japan (11), the UK and Unite States (tied in 17th place), Russia (115), China (129)
India (111), Saudi Arabia (151), Venezuela (160).
[Hong Kong's situation has recently changed for the worse. In India, there appears
to be a further decline in human freedom over last few years. One respectable research
institute has recently changed India's grade from "Free" to "Partly Free".]
