CLIMATE CHANGE
There is a consensus among scientists that greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide,
trap the sun's rays and cause an increase in temperature on earth. This is, to a large extent, caused by
human activity, mostly by burning of the fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas). As a result of climate
change, we are seeing higher sea levels in coastal areas and more severe storms. It is a question of
when, not if, growing areas of some countries become uninhabitable. Bangladesh may well be the first
country with a substantial population to face this problem.
There are some positive signs that some countries are making efforts to reduce dependence on
fossil fuels and to develop greener sources of energy, such as wind and solar. There is a rapid progress
toward making electric cars with zero emission of CO2. Methane is another greenhouse gas. The
digestive system of cows is responsible for significant release of methane. The development of plant-
based protein foods to replace beef and innovative success in producing lab meat promise significant
reduction in greenhouse gases by reducing animal farming for meat. Proposal for some form of carbon
tax is also up for debate.
