INDIA: POPULATION MYTH (Part 2)
[Based on the book "Population Myth" (2021) by S.Y.. Quraishi]
The demographic ratio has indeed changed, with clear increase in the percentage
of Muslims in India - from 9.8 in 1951 ton 14.2 in 2011. The Muslims are, however, taking
to family planning fast - in fact, faster than the Hindus. The common belief that Islam is
against family planning has caused acrimony between Hindu and Muslim community. The
Quran has never prohibited family planning. Another assertion that Muslims are
predominantly polygamous is a myth. The reports show that polygamy prevails in all
communities and among Muslims indeed the least so.
Contraceptive acceptance among Muslims is substantial and growing. Even sterilization is used
by some Muslims. Sachar committee report (2006) has estimated that the Muslim proportion by 2100
will stabilize between 17 and 21% of the Indian population by 2100 = a far cry from Muslims
becoming the majority in the country. Indian population will stabilize at about 1.7 billion with 1.27
billion Hindus and 320 million Muslims by the year 2101. High birth rates in India are dependent on
purely nonreligious factors, such as, income, education and access to health services. Economic
development of any community is the best contraceptive!
