INDIA: POPULATION MYTH ( Part 1)
[Based on the book "Population Myth" (2021) by S.Y. Quraishi]
The BJP and RSS leaders have, for years, been blaming Muslims for the purported spurt in the
country's population and raising the bogey of the Muslims eventually outnumbering Hindus in the
country. Based on the official data, especially, the four National Family Health Surveys (1992-93,
1998-99, 2005-2006, 2015-2016) however, this narrative does not hold water. The population growth
rate of various religions has come down in the decade 2001-2011 from the previous decade: for Hindus
from19.92% to 16.76% and for Muslims from 29.52% to 24.6%. In the decade 2011-2021, the
population growth rate among Hindus is projected to go down further from 16.8% to 15.7% and among
Muslims from 24.6% to 18.2%. The gap between the population growth rate of Hindus and Muslims
is closing fast.
So to say that Muslims will overtake Hindus does not make sense. The 2019 Economics
Nobel Prize winner Abhijit Bannerjee says that fearing any Muslim takeover in India is baseless.
