SEVEN YEARS OF BJP RULE IN INDIA

                                                             AN EVALUATION

          *     Despite slogans like "achchhe din ayenge" A disappointing performance with                         regard to economic development. Even prior to damage done by the pandemic of                   Covid-19, GDP growth was showing a significant slowing trend. The first                               wave of the pandemic, according to an Azim Premji study, has pushed 230                             million people below the poverty line. The second wave is supposed to have led                     to a loss of one crore jobs. The current unemployment rate is at about 11%.

           *    The Prime minister and his team has not dealt with the Covid-19 crisis with                              required sensitivity and efficiency, and has not taken scientific advice seriously.                     This has resulted in an unfortunate loss of many lives, especially during the                              second wave.

           *     Aggressive nationalism of Hindutva advocates has caused significant communal                    disharmony between Hindus and Muslims. Kashmiri Muslims have been                                particularly alienated.

           *     The liberal framework of India's democracy has been significantly compromised                    thru misuse of government agencies such as CBI, ED and Income Tax                                    Department to intimidate voices of opposition and to violate individual civil                            liberties of protesters. Independence of certain civic institutions like media and                      judiciary has been compromised.
