THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY OF MODI YEARS
Economic downturn in India, toward the end of second term of UPA government under the
leadership of Manmohan Singh, and the attraction and reputation of prosperous Gujarat
Model under the leadership of Narendra Modi, brought about a political earthquake in the 2014 general
election in India, ushering in BJP rule in the center under Modi as prime minister. It has been more than
eight years since Modi came to power. This is enogh time for its evaluation.
In my opinion, in brief, the following are the good, bad and ugly aspects of Modi years:
The Good:
Modi has a charismatic personality with widespread support from India's electorate.
He is a good orator. He is free from any personal financial corruption. He has implemented some
beneficial policies: Swachcha-Bharat (constructing thousands of toilets in rural areas), Mudra
Yojana (providing loans to the poor), Ayushyaman Yojana (providing free health insurance to the poor),
His cabinet secretary Nitin Gadkari has successfuly implemented many highway building projects.
The Bad:
He is an authoritarian leader, not seeking much advice from experts of different fields, in
making policy decisions. (demonitisation, new gs tax structure) He makes tall promises, without
follow ups, which remain embarrasingly unfulfilled (Getting rid of black money from the Indian
economy, creating two crores of new jobs per year, making India's economy worth 5 trillion dollars
in five years, doubling farmers annual income).
The Ugly:
Reawakening communal disharmony. especially between Hindus ans Muslims. Promoting
Hindutva philosophy to rejuvenate ancient Sanatan values of one religion, against modern secular ethos.
Weakening India's democracy by misusing governmet agencies like ED, CBI, Income Tax Office and
Police to intimidate opposition party leaders. Curbing individual liberties by concocting criminal FIRs
on opposition activists. Developing a nontransparent Electoral Bond scheme which has vastly
promoted corrupt political donations to the ruling party.
