ATTITUDE

In our life and death  there are very few things we can control. Our mental attitude

is one of those things which we can relatively control. Our attitude toward things and

people plays a large role in our being happy or miserable.

Some of our suffering is caused by being bothered about what other people think or

talk about us. Think: "other people's feelings or opinions do not touch my skin. Why

should  I be bothered? It is OK if some people do not like me. So what?"

We often make ourselves miserable by brooding about regrets and resentments

of the past: Why did my father always put me down? Why did I not get admission to a

medical school? Have an attitude: "What is past is gone for ever. It cannot be changed.

why don't I let go my regrets and resentments and move on with life?"

Fears of different kinds cause some of our suffering: fear of talking in front of an

audience, fear of failing an eamination, fear of approaching a girl I like. Avoiding things we

want to do, in the long run, makes fears even stronger. "Let me take small risks in life. It is

ok if I make mistakes or fail. Best way to deal with fear is facing it. Fear itself is not going

to cause a heart attack. Let me not fear the experience of fear itself."

Life does not always go on a smooth path. There are ups and downs. Pain and

misfortunes are part of life. Let us cultivate an attitude: "When pain comes my way and I

cannot do anything about it, I will stand there and bear it with patience and courage.

Nothing stays for ever. Even this will change."

Lastly, maintain an attitude of self respect: "I am an OK person". View others also with respect.
